Best Practices in the Diagnosis & Treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

OVERVIEW

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease whose heterogeneous presentations and overlap with other disorders make early, accurate diagnosis difficult, often delaying timely treatment. This CME-accredited activity provides clinicians with actionable tools to recognize the diverse motor and non-motor manifestations of ALS across its phenotypes, including frequently missed atypical presentations. This session reviews a structured diagnostic approach grounded in the latest evidence-based resources, such as the Gold Coast criteria, and discusses the strategic application of electrodiagnostic testing, neuroimaging, emerging biomarkers, and genetic testing. Expert faculty will also examine the evolving treatment landscape, weighing the latest evidence for approved disease-modifying therapies (riluzole, edaravone, and tofersen), alongside pipeline agents in development. After completing this session, learners will ultimately leave better equipped to reduce diagnostic delays and individualize treatment plans for patients with ALS.

OVERVIEW

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach, involving not only patients and clinicians but also the friends and family members who care for them. Approved disease-modifying therapies are available, but management remains largely symptomatic and supportive. This unique session brings the patients' and caregivers' voices directly into the conversation, examining the physical, cognitive, emotional, and economic burden of ALS. This session also demonstrates how a multidisciplinary team communicates and collaborates effectively across specialties and discusses the available tools and support caregivers may need throughout the disease course.

Beyond the Basics in CIDP – Confronting Misdiagnosis and Rethinking Treatment Strategy

OVERVIEW

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare, immune-mediated neuropathy with heterogeneous presentations and evolving diagnostic criteria that contribute to potentially prolonged misdiagnosis and treatment delays. Electrodiagnostic testing remains central to diagnosis, yet it is prone to technical and interpretive errors, necessitating a structured, multimodal approach that integrates clinical, electrophysiologic, and supportive findings to more reliably distinguish CIDP from related disorders. This CME activity reviews the latest diagnostic framework and examines an expanding therapeutic landscape, spanning corticosteroids, immunoglobulin therapy, plasma exchange, and emerging targeted agents, such as FcRn antagonists and complement inhibitors. This session also discusses how patient-specific factors, like disease phenotype, prior treatment response, comorbidities, and patient preferences, should guide treatment selection, sequencing, and long-term monitoring to preserve function and quality of life.

Myasthenia Mimics – How to Differentiate Between Similar Neuromuscular Disorders

OVERVIEW

Neuromuscular junction disorders encompass a broad range of conditions with overlapping symptomatology, including generalized myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, and congenital myasthenic syndromes. Overreliance on any single serological or electrophysiological test can lead to misdiagnosis and prolonged diagnostic and treatment delays. This satellite symposium provides neuromuscular specialists and other clinicians who evaluate these patients with a practical framework for recognizing distinguishing clinical features, building a differential diagnosis, and applying diagnostic criteria to reach timely and accurate diagnoses.

What is Coming Down the Pipeline for Generalized Myasthenia Gravis (gMG)?

OVERVIEW

Generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) is one of the most common autoimmune disorders of the neuromuscular junction. Although many patients respond to conventional immunosuppression, a substantial proportion continue to experience refractory disease or progression, and uptake of newer therapies remains a key unmet need. The treatment landscape is now expanding rapidly, with approved and investigational agents spanning B-cell–directed therapies, complement inhibition, neonatal Fc-receptor antagonism, BAFF/APRIL inhibition, and CAR-T cell approaches. This satellite symposium equips neuromuscular specialists and the broader care team with the resources to evaluate emerging efficacy and safety data across the therapeutic landscape and gives an understanding of how these agents can be used to better design individualized treatment plans for these patients.
