Community Oncology Connections™: Current Approaches and Emerging Strategies to Optimize Outcomes in Lower-Risk MDS

    December 3, 2026
    5:15 PM - 6:15 PM CT
    Virtual Regional Meeting | Kansas

    Overview:

Advances in understanding the molecular underpinnings of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) have reshaped how the disease is classified and risk stratified, with the 2022 WHO and ICC classifications and the molecular IPSS (IPSS-M) now integrating genetic features alongside clinical and morphologic findings. At the same time, targeted therapies for molecularly defined subgroups have transformed the management of lower-risk MDS (LR-MDS), shifting treatment goals beyond symptom control toward altering the course of disease. These changes bring new complexity to diagnosis, treatment selection, and sequencing for clinicians in the community.

This live, virtual, CME-certified Community Oncology Connections program, presented in conjunction with state oncology societies, pairs an academic MDS specialist with a community oncologist to explore how to apply current classification and risk stratification tools, select and sequence therapy based on disease- and patient-specific factors, and manage treatment-related adverse events. Through interactive patient cases and panel discussion, faculty will also review promising investigational agents, and their potential role in the evolving LR-MDS treatment landscape.

    Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, learners will be better able to:

    • Utilize newer classification systems and risk stratification tools to guide the management of patients with MDS.
    • Analyze key data and ongoing trials of current and emerging therapies for patients with LR-MDS.
    • Individualize the treatment of patients with LR-MDS based on disease- and patient-specific considerations.
    • Implement recommended strategies for monitoring, mitigating, and managing adverse events associated with newer therapies for LR-MDS.

    Target Audience:

This educational program is primarily directed toward community-based oncologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with MDS.
